System -> Remote key checking for monthly licenses - 12-06-2007, 05:16 AM

Will this include something about having to update that pesky key.php file each month ?

The update services is just for the addon products (WinApp, SyncWorks, InstaAlert) and not for the main php core.

Something better than using a key would be easier I think. Maybe something that connects to Kayako's servers when the key is nearing expiry to check to see if a renewal has been done. This possible for V4 Jamie?

I do not think it is viable (to have support desk functionality rest entirely on a call-back call to a query server) and it is not as secure as the mechanisms currently in place.

There are times when I'm away for a couple days, and it isn't exactly desirable to be forced to update the key file just to keep the help desk running.

Yes but how annoying is it to have to update your key every month for the leased users...

I believe someone - possibly "neosurge" had suggested this feature to Kayako Support and alot was discussed then. Kayako considered adding this as a feature and Varun did look into the possibilities to add this feature. With time I suppose Varun forgot about it as he got busy with a lot new things including the new office. I suppose you could just update that old ticket or create a new one reminding about it.

Having seen so many implementations of this (in other products) cause downtime when the key server was unavailable, I'd suggest it's not as good an idea as you might think. I see the value for monthly leased versions, however, if they could be on the same server meaning it is always up if the hosting server is.

Why does it have to be one or the other?

Implementing both methods as fail over for each other would be ideal.

This is a needed usability feature for monthly leased license clients. However, it should be an option - if a server cannot be connected to, it should fall back on the key.php file. If you haven't uploaded one, your system will freeze.

There should also be reminders that you need to update key.php, and the system is being remote verified which may fail at any time.

I must also add, this is a fairly big request and may not make it around the time of Version 4, but certainly something that we will consider.
