If you look at the expanded template list,there is room on the right side to explain what each template is used for. Most are obvious by the name, but some are not.

A little more commenting in the templates themselves would be useful to us amateur programmers. Maybe include some warnings on dangerous changes.

In the meantime, if the template title isn't self explanatory - look at a template for phrases used in the template, then look in the phrase list to get clues about when the template will be used.
