System -> Option to disable comment posting per area - 13-06-2007, 09:37 PM

Hi;

Any plans to allow us to diasble addition of comments to the support articles? Daily I have to delete 100+ posts by some sort of script that is posting stuff to the site.

There is no batch deleting option and I am afraid if we don't attend to this on a daily basis it has the potential to fill up the storage.. naturally the database keeps growing.

Why is this not a feature and why a batch delete is not available? It makes no sense!

With the volume of spam posted in there the feature is completely useless.

Regards,
Kami

Hi Kami,

If you check the Mod and Addon releases forum you will find a guide to disabling the comment features completely. The feature request to disable comments completely without code modification is now in the consideration queue, however.

Apologies, I referred to the wrong forum. The guide can be found here: Disabling comments and stopping comment spam

System -> Option(s) to disable comment posting completely - 01-08-2007, 01:46 PM

This has been a long overdue request, an easy one to implement, not sure why we can't turn off comments or use captcha with comments to prevent the massive spam. I have to apply this post every time I update SS. It's a shame I can't have valid comments from legit users because the comments system is so easily spammed.

I certainly second this suggestion! It's a shame to have to edit templates just to disable comments.

Hmm, thats a bit annoying. There is an option for "Enable Article Rating" but not one for comments. Certainly support this feature request.

There was a modification provided by "Bear" if I remember correctly that allowed you to disable comments. I would search the modification forum for it.

EDIT: Here is the link - Disabling comments and stopping comment spam

I know there is a modification to do it but as suggested, would be nice to have an option to make things easier.

Yes, I applied the "modification" to comment out the "insertComment" method in code. Sad, this is probably one of the easiest modifications Kayako could do for the security of the suite, yet they continue to fail to understand the problem. I'm sure if they kept their support desk updated and looked at the comments of their corresponding sections, they would have an outrageous number of comments AND no way to purge them either!

How do you mean "fail to understand the problem". Where do you get this impression from?

Wow, I just noticed this for the first time. I didn't even know I had comments to approve until I was sifting through a raw SQL backup and saw all this spam in the swcommentdata table.

No way to turn off comments huh? What an oversight.

Did this feature get introduced sometime after v3.00.32? I have a client running that version and don't see any comment options...

Hi Merit,

No, the option is not yet available. However, there is a modification in the Modifications forum that disables it completely.

Thanks for the info Jamie, and thanks for that link Craig. I'll have to go down this route but what a pain having to potentially make these changes after each upgrade.

I've also noticed in the newest version (3.11.01) the counters for the number of comments is wrong as well. Just since midnight (9 hours ago) I've received 15 comments in my knowledgebase section and have 0 approved comments, yet it says "Comments (5)" for some reason.

Ugh.
