Use Template-Groups instead of departments. Doing so, every Group has it's own KB, Tickets, News, and so on.
Easiest way for the customer is to set up two subdomains like
product1.yourdomain.tld
product2.yourdomain.tld
For the first set up an automatic redirect to yourportal.yourdomain.tld/index.php?group=producta
and
yourportal.yourdomain.tld/index.php?group=productb
Second, modify the staff rights, to gain access to the groups.
That's the way it works perfect.
