(SWIFTFOUR-419) Please use a config.php.new file - 10-12-2005, 02:55 PM

So when we update our web files we don't overwrite the config.php. Just like vBulletin, when you first configure SupportSuite, you'll have to have people rename config.php.new to config.php. I would also like to see update packages with NO IMAGES, just like vBulletin does, to prevent overwriting custom graphics using the same names as the default package.

I'm a customer, developers can add to their trackers, I'll bring things to someone's attention here, what they want to do with it is up to them. I don't have customers adding to my bug tracker, that's my job.

As this is mainly a customer - customer forum chances are by the time someone from Kayako comes and looks at the forums this post will be lost.

If you don't want to post it in the bugs/request tracker then thats upto you, maybe someone else who really actually wants to see this done will add it to the tracker.

Change config.php to config.php.new PLEASE - 04-10-2006, 12:41 PM

Varun,

Basic installations 101. Do not provide an update that is going to overwrite data a client probably needs to maintain. Just as vBulletin does, and as I suggested this very thing months ago, you should deliver a file named "config.php.new" and in the documentation instruct the user to rename it to "config.php" and set the parameters within. This way, when you publish an update, the config.php doesn't get overwritten every time we forget to remove it from the source of the update. It would also be VERY nice if, as does vBulletin, you provided an update that does not contain graphics (unless there is a new button, etc.). This prevents our client themes/custom graphics from being overwritten.

Put yourself in the customers shoes!

From the Attachment bug thread -- you should also be testing your platform on PHP 5 by the way, not only PHP 4!

Oh yea, TOTALLY agree with this. I usually make the mistake of overwriting and then having to login to the backup server to restore.

Deffo needs implemented before the next version is released. I always manage to overwrite it on at least one install when upgrading *rolls eyes*

Just good I have Righteous Backup in operation!

Did the same mistake on my first eSupport upgrade - backup saved the day. Will be glad to see this as a feature.

I believe this feature has now been added on :]
It helps alot with re-installations.
I had updated mine one time and it over wrote the previous config.php.

a Backup saved the day though :]
