Import users from Excel spreadsheet - 07-08-2007, 02:14 PM

Hello,
We're looking to get eSupport for our company's help desk support system, and I have a question regarding the hosted version of eSupport.

Is it possible to import a list of usernames/passwords from an Excel spreadsheet into the eSupport user database so each user does not have to be entered manually or register themselves? This list would be used as a replacement for Active Directory integration since, as I understand it, AD integration with a hosted install is not a viable option.

I see no reason why AD integration wouldn't work on the hosted platform. Can I ask who told you it wouldn't?

I've been comparing several commercial help desk systems, and the comapnies I've talked to will not do AD integration with the install hosted on their servers. It seems that with a hosted install, it would be too much of a security issue to allow an outside user to connect to our internal AD server. Even if we accepted that risk since we presumably trust the hosting company, they weren't willing to sell a hosted AD solution. I can find info on Kayako's site that they offer AD integration, but it doesn't distinguish if it also applies to hosted installs. Do you know Kayako's policy regarding this?

Well as LoginShare details are entered via the admin area of Kayako, I see no reason why AD wouldn't work on the hosted solution. Jamie will be able to confirm this when he comes back online later though.

Is there a way to do this, if you don't have AD integration? I'm going to need to import a bunch of users this week. All the same password.

I don't mind importing it via SQL (I have NaviCat to help me).

I guess I could also write some kind of login share but I'd rather not try to figure it out if I can help it.

I tried just inserting a user into the swusers/swuseremails tables and it didn't work.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thats odd. Does the user show inside Staff CP -> Users -> Manage Users?

They do -- as a blank item for full name for some reason.

I'll give your suggestion a try.

I did that actually (minus groups -- since there's nothing to edit in there (yet).

I saw the user in the users listing, but with a blank name. Also, when clicking on the name itself I got a PHP error message.

I'll try it again and post it here.

Quick question,

Does userpassword have to be unique or is it just a hash of userpasswordtxt?

I'm just taking a line like:

7 2 Alex Feigenson ***HASH*** password 1188906208 0 0 1 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 0 0

And copy/pasting it with a new unique user ID/name but with the same other values (since I want the same password on every account).

userpassword should be an MD5 hash of the password. userpasswordtxt should be the raw password in plain text.
