News and Template Groups

I'm aware that you can currently assign a single news item to only one template group, requiring you to copy items multiple times for all of your groups. However, I was wondering if there was a way to modify the news templates to pull items from another group. For example, if I have GroupA set as the template group for an article, is there a way to edit the news templates for GroupB to pull GroupA articles? That would seem to be a decent work-around until a new release replaces that drop-down list on news items with checkboxes. My familiarity with PHP is pretty low- I've pulled off some template customizations up until now but I can't figure this one out. I'm turning to the experts. Thanks!

I am trying to do, what sounds like the same thing. Assign different news items to different template groups. What I would like to see is the same options as there are when you can assign KB article categories to different template groups. I don't see what the difference is between a news item and a KB article category. In my very limited knowledge it seems like it should be pretty easy.
