Well I personally feel Kayako should make swift in the way Invision Power Board is. All db connects generic and then users can make database drivers for Kayako users. Is a big task if they havn't already done somthing like this so don't expect it until 3.1+.

hehe the "mysql isnt a real database" posts are amusing. MySQL 5.0 support would be nice though (3.00.26 apharently has it but its not stable yet).

MySQL scales very well. SQL2000 only has an advantage when your dealing with tables that take up gigs of space. (I cant imagine a kayako database with gigs of tickets... seriously who has a million tickets?)

I agree with craig though.. abstraction would be nice. If only for the fact that if a shop already has standardized in a particular database platform, its easier to write a driver for their particular setup than deploy a dedicated database specifically for kayako. In my case I had to deploy a 4.x MySQL specifically for kayako (since the only accessible mysql databases running on my network are 5.0).

A database platform is only as good as the DBA. a good dba and mysql is enterprise.

I personally don't know of any Corporate enviroment that would think of using My SQL as a backend.. MSSQL and ORACLE are the only 2 choices... If you try to get any accepted off the shelf program / ERP Package / data warehouse / or amost anything else.. they will laugh at you if you said you want it to run on a MYSQL backend.

The industry does not have any respect for MYSQL and I would not truse it to run anything but the most non-important applications. And if you think that the only advantage to MSSQL is it can deal with large table size.. you need to take some MSSQL Classes and learn the POWER THAT IS Microsoft SQL !!!!

(Sorry I was overtaken by the ghost of Bill Gates!!) 8)

That made me smile - I can point to many enterprises that operate MySQL backends for some or all of their critical operations. In my own organisation, it's only really stored procedures now that mean we have to maintain an MSSQL environment for our major homegrown applications.

The reality is that both MySQL and MSSQL are stable and powerful - Choosing the right tools for the job is what matters, and MySQL is just fine for running the Kayako applications, even in a demanding enterprise environment.

The reality for me is that it is the same Senior IT managers that think MySQL is not an option, that also think spending $100,000s on a solution like Rightnow or Salesforce is going to provide better value than $500 spent on Kayako. My experience is that they are wrong on both counts....

Regards,

Ian

Spoken like someone who has no business or experience working in the IT industry, and this is coming from someone who administers or has administered servers running MySQL, Oracle, Postgres, and MS SQL Server.
