The characterset needs to be UTF-8. So does the database connection characterset, which is in php.ini. The table's collations all need to be utf8_general_ci . If you open a support ticket, the support staff can walk you through the process, and if you're on the helpserve servers, they'll do it for you.

Also, 3.30.02 is before several language-related upgrades went into place; there would be minor searching bugs. I strongly recommend that you bring your helpdesk up to date (current is 3.50.06). If you're on the helpserve servers, just contact support and ask them to upgrade you and they'll do it for you.

Obviously take backups first, just like you would with anything.

I am having the same issue too on 3.60.04 after I spent days translating the XML file. All the settings are as they should be and set to UTF-8.

I only noticed that the database tables collation are not set to utf8_general_ci.

But on my localhost its working fine on a CP1256 or something like that collation.

I hope changing collation is not a hard process to do.

Removed the system and create a new database with the proper collation utf8_general_ci and then installed the system and imported the language file. Everything is working now.

Yeah, there are a bunch of places that languages get involved: the database's collation and characterset, the php database connection characterset, php's allowed language range, the support suite configuration file, and so on.

Version 4 is better at explaining what is not configured in the way it expects with regards to language.
