255 Char limit for custom field text area - 01-06-2009, 06:01 PM

Has anyone successfully extended the 225 CHAR limit for custom fields text area? If so how did you do this, I assuming you will need to change from CHAR to Text in mysql but are there any other alterations needed?? Are there any risks/errors/problems associated with the required modifications?
