Email Piping on separate server or just no email piping at all - 24-07-2005, 07:18 AM

My mail server is on another machine from the support ticket system. Is it possible to pipe mails from the mail server to the database so that they can be on separate machines?

I've been using DeskPro and they've allowed that for the longest time and it's very convenient to not be forced to have the mail server on the same machine as the support ticket system (for security and other reasons).

The other question is, can I turn off email piping completely? That way when a client gets a reply he is sent a generic email telling him to log in to see the reply. Client logs in to the support ticket system, then replies from there.

Reason being that I have my support ticket system on a secure server, and sometimes clients transmit confidential information. It's best to be able to enforce security so that nothing confidential is transmitted over email.

VenturesOnline's support ticket system works this way.

You can create a mail server in your support ticket system server too, and forward email from your own domain mail server to this mail server (with another domain/subdomain) etc.

e.g. your domain is mycompany.com with a mail server in some other machine
now your install a mail server also in your esupport machine, e.g. for support.mycompany.com

then you set support@mycompany.com to forward to support@support.mycompany.com and set piping at support@support.mycompany.com, then it should be ok.

That solution, while it may work, is too convoluted and unnecessary. DeskPro already allows you to pipe emails through a separate mail server. It then writes to the database directly (whether the mysql database is local or remote). I don't see why Kayako can't do this?

If I'm not mistaken you can set the parser to check using IMAP. We are going to use it to check emails in an Exchange server mailbox. It will then send any replies using SMTP.

As for the auto-replies when a call is logged - why not just turn it off.

Hope this helps.
