Excessive Bandwidth Usage > 19GB+ just today! - 03-03-2008, 12:22 PM

Hi,

Since we installed Kayako on our server, bandwidth usage has sky rocketed.

Just looking at our server stats, the bandwidth today alone stands at over 19GB which seems very excessive.

At a guess we are averaging at less than 100 tickets a day (probably more like 60 or 70).

Is this level of bandwidth normal?

A few of us are running Instalert but none of us are using livesupport.

Hi Jason,

Are you using POP3 mail polling?

Hi Jamie,

Yes, we are using POP3.
Could this be the cause?

Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason,

Yes it could be - particularly if you are connecting to an external server, very frequently.

How many e-mail queues do you have that poll POP3 boxes, and are you downloading a great deal of attachments?

Also, are you using cPanel?

just to ensure I understood correctly, mail is fetched from our accounts via POP3, which i set up using the mail parser...

we have 6 pop3 email accounts from which we fetch the emails
(on a different server to our Kayako install).
The cron is set to run every 10 minutes to fetch the mails.

Our messages as a rule do not have attachments.

The 19GB i was referring to is OUTGOING traffic from our server where kayako is installed. The incomming bandwidth usage for today is just 0.083GB, which i assume would include the bandwidth from fetching the POP3 emails.

Hi Jason,

Are you hosted on a cPanel server? I recall this exact issue happening to me, and it turned out to be a (still) unresolved bug in cPanel's bandwidth monitoring; but this is up in the air at the moment. Can you drill down your bandwidth usage charts and find what resource / protocol is using the bandwidth?

Hi,

We are using a Webmin based server.
Our server support has told me that there is a pearl script owned by user support running for approximately 50 minutes.
Would this be anything to do with Kayako?

Do you have Mail Polling (POP / IMAP Fetch) as well?
