Thanks Bear. I'm wondering if I just did things wrong to begin with. To get the .ico file I just changed a .gif file extension to .ico. If this is incorrect, how do you go about creating a .ico file?

That could be part of it. A favicon file needs to be fairly specific to work reliably. It needs to be no more than 16x16 and 16 colors, according to the specs. Get a copy of it to me and I'll convert it for you if you like.

This is most definetly it - an ICO file is a file format of its own. Like you cannot rename a JPG to a GIF file and have it work, you cannot do this to a ICO file.

You must search and download an icon converter or editor.

Also, ICO files are not contained in the main browser cache but on a per-bookmark or history basis (usually).

I thought that was the problem. However, if this is the case, why does the kayako favicon still show up? Wouldn't it cause an error or display something else if I replaced all the kayako favicon's with that one?

Because your browser has cached the icon. Until you give your browser a new one that it can load, the most recent one that worked will stick.

Okay so how do I give my browser a new one? Whenever I refresh my browser I use ctrl+F5 which is supposed to clear the browser's cache and refresh but that doesn't work.

Here you go, hope that one works for you.
I had to go find my icon program again. Newly built system and I hadn't reinstalled.

That only refreshes the page content, it doesn't remove cached files.

Thanks Bear, I've uploaded the files but still not working. How do I go about removing the cache files then? I've cleared the cache folder under my Kayako install, now I need to clear the other cache files that you and Jamie speak of.

It depends on the browser. I've attached a screen shot of Mozilla, located under edit->preferences.

Okay well according to MS, I cleared the history and stored images as well as the cookies relating to my domain. However, the kayako favicon still appears. Maybe I'm misunderstanding this whole thing. The icon that I want to change is the icon that is displayed next to the page name in IE 7 tabs as well as what sits to the left of the web addresss. Currently its displaying the infiniti symbol (Kayako symbol) instead of my sheild.

Browsers tend not to use the central cache to cache icons, but in fact do it per-URL or per-bookmark, or both.

Either way, things tend to be flakey when it comes to detecting the icons and updated icons.

Try bookmarking a new page, or deleting and recreating one. No guarantees with IE...even though they more or less "invented" this function, it never worked well in IE.

Been there done that...I even tried navigating to my site by typing in the address into a new IE window instead of using my bookmark but no go.

Does anybody know in particular which favicon.ico I would have to change to get this to work?
