Help With Custom Fields - 04-01-2007, 06:40 PM

We are trying to setup a couple custom fields for our support tickets and could use a little help.

We use support tickets for technical support and need the submitted fields to be as detailed as possible. We've setup a couple additional "Text Area" Fields in "User System Info" Group. The main issue is that these fields have a 255 character limit. Although the customer can type in as many characters as they need to, what we see gets cut off.

Here's an example of what we would like our tickets to look like:
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?langid=100&navid=73

We're almost there, but could use a little help with setting up a "Custom Field" that would allow for more than 255 characters.

Also, we would like to be able to add "disclaimers" or additional text to clarify some of the fields.

For example, we have a field where the customers are supposed to enter the version number of our software. A lot of our less computer savvy customers have trouble finding this. It would be helpful if we could add a note underneath the field instructing the user how to find the necessary info.

Let me know if there's anything else you need to know.

This is due to a javascript function 'limitText()' that limits input to 255 chars. However, do not delete this function, as it will not solve your problem; you will be able to input 1000 characters if you'd like, but only the first 255 will be committed to the database. I have not yet checked to see if this is a database issue (prob'ly being that the column has a char limit on it of 255; default length value for a CHAR type column), or a processing issue (it's truncated when it hits PHP processor.)

If you have any sort of progress on this; let me know.
