Is it possible to have different auto responders for each department?

Not really but there's a workaround for this. Create new template groups and make different templates for the autoresponders. Keep the other templates same. Now, assign each department to a different template group with respect to the auto responder template. Hope that helps.

Infact you can have different autoresponders for each departments. Varun has explained in the past how can it be done. Search the forums and you should have the answer

You could probably do something it like this in the email_staffreply template:

<{$ticket[department] eq "department-title"}>
...
<{else}>
..
<{/if}>
