Strange charaters in mails sent by esupport - 25-07-2005, 11:08 AM

Hi,

See the message below, it contains the "=" sign, in the word Helpdesk. This happens more often, but we do not know why. Any place we can search for this (automatic, erroneous and unlogical) replacement?

Additionally when I review the message in Outlook, I see the following at the end of the e-mail:

</font

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Nika.

Look at:

upload/locale/en-us/en-us.php

Look for:

'html_encoding' => 'UTF-8',

base64 encoding instead of quoted-printable because Microsoft's e-mail clients appear to have trouble with quoted-printable messages.

I chose none, but base64 works too.

'charset' => 'UTF-8',
'html_encoding' => 'none',
'text_encoding' => '8bit',
'html_charset' => 'UTF-8',
'text_charset' => 'UTF-8',

It looks like it's ok now, thank you!

One thing remains. At the end of the mail the following text (HTML code not correctly closed) appears:

</font

For instance this appears in the note:

Ticket DetailsTicket ID: KUJ-871421
Department: Consultants
Priority: Low
Status: Open
Link:Click Here
</font

Regards,

Nika.

Take a closer look at your templates, you'll probably find a tag that hasnt been closed.

Nope. I have looked through all templates, especially the Tickets -> alert_newreply template, which does not contain any faulty tags just after the entry of the Link ([arlink])...

Nika.

LOL - nope, it's not bad, but I think it is related to other problems (malformed container, see other thread).

As to your issue, please supply some more details. Since when do you have this issue, what versions of PHP, MySQL, OS, etc. are you using?

Possibly also copy/paste the charset details... (see other posts)

Regards,

Nika.

Ok, I'm a step further again... it seems to be caused by the <BR /> quotes in the templates. Why is <BR /> used instead of a simple <BR> (without the space and forward slash)... Possibly also an Outlook (I'm using Outlook 2003 SP1) issue - what should I do?

<BR /> makes it XHTML compatible. It shouldnt cause any issues in any of the latest browsers.

LOL - tell that to Microsoft. We are using Outlook + Word 2003 SP1 (latest version) and it does... I changed it to <BR> in the templates and causes no more problems...

Regards,

Nika.

I ran into this same problem tonight with these same characters. These characters show up in emails sent to Hotmail accounts. It looks like Hotmail does not process the <font> and &nbsp; tags properly with the default character set and encoding.

I changed my en-us.php settings to:

'charset' => 'UTF-8',
'html_encoding' => '8bit',
'text_encoding' => '8bit',
'html_charset' => 'us-ascii',
'text_charset' => 'us-ascii',

and Hotmail can display them properly.

I'm having this problem with viewing my emails in hotmail accounts, and as per Eddie's post have tried the encoding changes....in fact I've tried all sorts of configs, without success.

Has anyone else overcome this in another way?

Mark
