templates and user access control - 13-09-2005, 11:45 AM

Hello

I'm having quite a lot of trouble understanding how to use the templates together with user groups to achieve a basic level of access control.
I've been reading through the forums and have found a lot of indicators and a lot of people discussing the subject, but havn't found a clear "how-to" or a complete explanation yet.
I will explain what I'm trying to do and hopefully someone with more suportsuite-knowledge than myself can help out a bit.

I've figured out how to create a Template Group and how to assign this template group to i.e. the knowledge base catogories and download categories. The thing that bothers me, is how to tie this assignment between templates and categories with user groups in order to enable one group of users to access one template group when logging in, another group of users to access another template group when logging in and guest to access the default template group when visting the support pages.

I found out that accessing the system with domain.com/supportsuite/?group=testtemplate makes the system use the "testtemplate" template. But how do I go about making the system use this template only for users who logs into the system.

Can this at all be done?

Also I found out that when enabling password protection for a template group, the http authentication box appears -which is actually somewhat what I'm trying to achieve -but this box is not tied together with the registered users.
I'm confused :/

Hope someone can shed som light on the whole template/user rights concept for me, cause I've spent a lot of time trying to understand it without getting to the bottom of it.

Thanks in advance

/Lars Hammer

Hi Lars,
The system will automatically switch the Template Group based on the User Group of the user. So if you have assigned Customers User Group to Customers Template Group, The system will automatically load the Custom Template Group when any user under Customers User Group logs in.

I have done exactly the same thing (assigning template group to user group), but for a "fresh" login, the system will return loginresult=0 and stay in the default template group.

I'm trying to figure this out for quite some time now... no reply on the ticket that I have created for this... someone please help!

Hi helpdeskmavim,

make sure that in admin CP:
Template/Manage Group -> Your template Properties.
The option "Restrict Users Group" is set to no.

This cause me a lot of pain as before 3.0.8x this option was ignored and after a update suddently nobody could login...

Oh dear... see what Hiren Mehta gave me as a reply:

Hi,
You need to make sure you have set Restrict Users Group to Yes. Check that under:

Admin CP > Templates > Manage Groups > templategroup > Settings > Default User Groups > Restrict Users Group

Regards,

Hiren Mehta

This is the opposite answer...

locked all other users out - 16-01-2007, 03:33 PM

wonder if anyone can help. I dont even want to bother email kayako i will only get a stupid answer like is the computer switched on.

I have setup a new group, called Dealers
Created a new template called dealers also.

Have made it so all users under dealers group can only access the dealer template and therefore the knowledgebase.

The problem i have now is my default group and template wont allow anyone to login. I have tried to set the restrict users to no and yes with no luck.

sorted - 16-01-2007, 08:52 PM

I seem to have sorted it, when i login using another pc it seems to work ok. Untill i try to swap between a dealer and a customer i will always be passed and get the invalid username password on the dealer site. Seems kayako has a bit of a problem with temp files or cookies or something remebering the last login.

Maybe they can sort it once they get thier support deparment working.

Your post seems to be the closest to what I'm looking to try to do so I thought I'd see if you could help me.

I'm trying to figure out how, if it have two template groups set-up, I can have two groups VIEW different knowlegebase information. I don't see how to give a separate URL or something so that different users will see different things.

Do you have any advice?

Well I still dont know how this works. Sometime it does, others it doesnt.

This is my case.

This is what i wanted.

I wanted a public Group for visitors and a private Group for clients.

Why? Because i dont want the visitoris to see the FAQs of clients.

So far so good. I assigned the FAQs i did not wanted visitors to see to the Private Group which i enabled to require a login.

So i tested it.

On Opera ok. Visitors cant see the private FAQ.
Explorer the same.
Mozilla, dont know why, you clic on a private FAQ and it shows the visitors.

Also instead that the system requires a login for private faq, it shows an ugly error.

The other problem is that when a client logins into the public area he is not redirected to the private group but stays there.

Now the big problem. Sometimes the private FAQs are restricted and sometime they dont, which is pretty weard. For example you load a private faq as visitor now and it doesnt show, you then test it after 1 hour, and it shows, even if you are not logged in, and you are a visitor. I tried that even after clearing all cache on different browsers. So the system is buggy, how is possible that someone can load a private faq that is restricted to clients only? And sometimes it works.

I bought Kayako a week ago and until now i cannot make it work correctly, i have tons of issues and bugs, even the Winapp doesnt work, makes my PC slow and it crashes. I really think im a idiot now to have spend so much for something that doesnt work and only gives me headches. The weard thing is that Kayako is all over the web, and it has tons of freatures and most people recommend it, i really cant understand why it works so bad with me.
