Ticket total

Is there a way to run some kind of the report to show how many tickets were closed in the day, how many are still open, how many on hold?

Have you tried to look at the ticket reports?

i.e Tickets » Reports » Response Time

This with the custom export to excel support suite modification might be some help for this question your having.

I know it might not be as cut and dry as a simple number of open or number of closed tickets but, you could easely determine this with excel and a simple sort of the data and observing the row numbers.
