You did run the upgrade tool didn't you rather than only uploading the files?

I must admit it isn't clear that you must do that if you don't read the manual (which most people choose not to do - including me). I think there should be some sort of detection system to detect if the files you have requires a DB upgrade and if it does, redirect you when you try to get into the admin area. That would sort this.
