What happens when SMTP connection for outgoing mail fails? - 06-03-2008, 12:48 AM

Hi,

We're using an external SMTP server (authenticated) for outgoing mail. What happens if the connection to this server is down temporarily for some reason. Are outgoing emails queued and delivered later? Is there a log somewhere that would show these failures?

Thanks,
Dave

I think they are lost as Kayako does not maintain any such email queues.

I thought Kayako queued them for sending later if it was down...? If not, it certainly should.

There is a mail queuing option but my impression is that it's for mass email, not for staff replies. Still not sure how that works ....

We are using an external SMTP and recently it was failing to connect. As far as I can tell there is no place where this was logged. I can't say for sure how many customers didn't actually get their replies because of it.

It would be helpful to log failures sending mail. Maybe add an outgoing mail error log?

Hi there,

I do not believe the e-mails are queued if they cannot be sent via SMTP. I will find out if this certainly is the case.

Does anyone have an answer for this? I'm considering Kayako, and this would certainly be a show-stopper for me.

Yes, I would like an answer to this too. Failed emails should be queued and sent on an internal cron / scheduled task.

I think this calls for a feature request.

I don't see it as a feature. It's more likely a bug while every function should have ANY form of fault detection.

Although it is between a feature request and a bug, I feel it needs fixing on a bug priority basis.
