Best way of avoiding this is to keep windows update disabled and update manually when there is actually an update you need *winks*

This is not really a solution to anything; automatic or not updates would still be applied eventually and the same problem would occur, just slightly delayed (as would receiving the benefits of the updates themselves). It is also not always possible in an office environment where update (such as secpol) policies are enforced automatically.

Not true. It allows the problem to be fixed first in a newer version before you update. It is the way I have always done it and it has saved problems like this. I do realise that this isn't possible for the users inside a larger office enviroment however.
