Server Load - Bandwidth Requirements - 30-05-2008, 01:42 AM

Hi,

We need to run almost real-time live chat (no voip). and would like to know what sort of bandwidth and server would be required to run 20 chat sessions at once, with another 50 in the queue, with upto 2 chats using the ViewShare.

As we need as real-time as possible we would be setting the admin setting for Live Response to:

Chat Refresh Interval: 1

Also, what is an acceptable visitor refresh interval setting if we had 300 visitors online at any one time.

Do Kayako have some sort of calculation for this, or are there other users from large corporations out there using this product with similar settings and traffic as per above ?

Many Thanks

ViewShare bandwidth is totally separate from the php server software. The user connects directly to the computer you have the windows application on. Having just tested this, I found it is loading about 1.1kb each time the screen changes on the medium quality setting. You will be able to calculate bandwidth for this based on that.

As for server bandwidth, I strongly recommend you set your refresh rate to 10 or 15 seconds. If you have that many chat sessions, its just going to be totally hammering the server which won't be a bandwidth problem but will be a resource problem for the server. The actual server bandwidth will be minimal as all it is doing is transporting small amounts of text.

Thanks for the reply, but we want to run as real-time as possible, so 10 to 15 second refresh rates is far from real time. So for chat, my question is to any one else running similar setup, what infastructure (server(s)) do you have in place to handle such loads ?

Hi garryhs,

As far as I remember, ViewShare connections are direct -they are not proxied through the server; so the only limitations should be your own and the end user's connection (practically, your own upload bandwidth).

Still looking to see if anyone out there is running 1 second refresh on chat, with 20 active chat sessions and 50 chat sessions in the queue ?

Anyone ?
