I have several clients who would like to know if there will be a version of KayakoMobile compatable with the Apple iPhone?

As the iPhone only supports web based apps, they can probably use the PDA interface at http://supportsuite/pda/.

Although an interface designed for the iPhone which fits in with the look/feel of the iPhone would be very cool.

Yuck @ the iPhone! It doesn't even support 3G!

Because of it being a closed product tho, you are not able to make apps for it so a version for the iPhone is out of the question.

Yuck? I got one for free from one of our Suppliers where we get all our cell phones.. Ya it doesn't have 3G but the internet it still super fast.. Web pages run fast... Video on you tube run fast (absolutely NO Lag) and image is crystal clear... I personally like the device and deciding if I wanna get rid of my Buggy Palm Treo and get the iPhone...

Funny as we were able to port Solitaire from our Palm Treo and make it work with the MAC OS and load it on the iPhone and runs just fine.. So yes you can load other programs.. Its just extremely hard without a auto-installer...

Code:
iPhone to Support Third-Party Web 2.0 Applications

Innovative New Way to Create Applications for iPhone

WWDC 2007, SAN FRANCISCO—June 11, 2007—Apple® today announced that its revolutionary iPhone™ will run applications created with Web 2.0 Internet standards when it begins shipping on June 29. Developers can create Web 2.0 applications which look and behave just like the applications built into iPhone, and which can seamlessly access iPhone’s services, including making a phone call, sending an email and displaying a location in Google Maps. Third-party applications created using Web 2.0 standards can extend iPhone’s capabilities without compromising its reliability or security.

“Developers and users alike are going to be very surprised and pleased at how great these applications look and work on iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Our innovative approach, using Web 2.0-based standards, lets developers create amazing new applications while keeping the iPhone secure and reliable.”

Web 2.0-based applications are being embraced by leading developers because they are far more interactive and responsive than traditional web applications, and can be easily distributed over the Internet and painlessly updated by simply changing the code on the developers’ own servers. The modern web standards also provide secure data access and transactions, like those used with Amazon.com or online banking.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and will enter the mobile phone market this year with its revolutionary iPhone.

Hmm, maybe I am wrong. Was sure I read you couldn't develop apps for it and only Apple developed ones would work.

Can't develop native apps for it, only the web based ones which run through Safari over the internet.

This is correct - the lack of a good developer platform like that of Windows Mobile will make KayakoMobile very hard to port to. In fact, it would not be a port because it would have to be rewritten from the ground upward, and would be nowhere near as robust.

Also, I believe it is too early to gauge whether or not a demand would warrant some sort of client offering similar functionality.

Actually, it's probably pretty easy to build.

Recently (as you can see from my modifications) I've been digging around SupportSuite and noticed things are pretty well abstracted so I can just call a function to fetch a specific set of data etc.

A good base for this would be the PDA interface which could be expanded upon.

Personally I don't have an iPhone and won't be able to get one any time soon (live in Australia) so it doesn't interest me that much, but if I have some time (not much recently) I might look in to it.

Well if it is just expanding the PDA interface then it may be worth doing as it will benefit other people, not just iPhone users.

So will the regular Safari client in the iPhone work with Kayako? Any reason it wouldn't?

Hi joesph,

Absolutely - but this discussion is about the KayakoMobile application, which is a standalone app that downloads tickets from your installation, and lets you manage them offline.
