Who has a Pocket PC that has Internet Access? - 29-05-2006, 04:45 PM

KM may be a nice concept, but as a .NET developer and also mobile device developer, those with internet connectivity are few and far between, more so on the Pocket PC side than the Palm side.

I just don't see an app like this getting its ROI. I'm curious, how many of you have a Pocket PC with Internet access (when not cradled)?

I have a Windows Mobile 5 device....with all on internet all the time through Verizon. So it could work for me, but in reality, I don't hardly ever use it. On the road I may check out of boredom, but thats it. Same with this VOIP integration stuff...limited usefulness compared to the core product.

We use Verizon's XV660 devices. Work great for us so far (about a year). We're based in an EVDO city and several EVDO areas around us, so it works great.

Hi,

1.) KayakoMobile isn't designed for devices with an Internet connection per se; it is designed to take a snapshot, or synchronize the server's database while cradled to a PC or in an area where WiFi or Bluetooth can be utilized - then taken into the field where the connection is not available. That is the entire reasoning behind KM.

2.) Nearly all late model Pocket PC devices and other handheld devices running WM5 are equipped with WiFi and Bluetooth, as well as internal modems. Connectivity, even if it were a part of the design, wouldn't be a problem.

I'm in the UK and have an O2 XDA exec and it is such a cool tool that I no longer need top carry a laptop with me.

I use www.mydomain.com/support/pda all the time to support customers and it is brilliant. I have a 3G/GPRS connection and the freedom this little tool has given my life is priceless. As a one man band I have to be available all the time, and using the SMS system built in to eSupport I can even get text alerts to the XDA for Urgent/High/Emergency tickets only.

The Wi-Fi that is built into it as well is excellent. I took my wife to Paris for our wedding anniversary. Put the XDA in my pocket and found that the hotel had free wi-fi......so I was in PAris for 5 days and not one single customer was aware I was 'out of the office'.

To be able to use KayakoMobile would be fantastic. Even on GPRS. Login, download, come offline. Work on my answers in my time. Connect again when I'm done and have all customer tickets updated instantly is brill and I for one can't wait. This is the future.

The only gripe I would have with using the /pda/ system is that replies sent to my customers don't show the proper mailbox return for kayako to pick up if a customer replies. Instead it seems to reply to them with my personal email address which is currently mobile@mydomain.com (so its a giveaway at the minute to customers that I'm probably not in the office), and replies from them don't get inserted into the ticket thread. Its either a bug, or a setup issue that I haven't got right. ?

Im like 'netgroup' I use an i-mate JasJar which is esentially the same as the O2 XDA and I am online all the time, with 3G or GPRS and wifi if available. I have an IM client full email and browser capability....an office away from the office without a laptop.

I have yet to play with Kayako mobile as I am in the process of ketting kayako configured....but can't wait.

Downside > it's a 'housebrick' as my wife calls it

I use a Treo 700w and purchased KM. However, Im pretty disappointed in the app. The interface and functionality are hardly useful. I have found that using the pda web interface is FAR more functional.

There's a few bucks down the drain....if you have internet access on your pda/smartphone, dont waste the money on KM. I suppose it makes sense if you do not have access beyond your cradle.

for me it's more usefull a "KM" (download, offline work, then upload the updates) for a notebook when you have not internet access all over the road. well, here in Argentina WIFI access directly does not exist

so we need a solution to connect from an on site internet access, download all, then work in the replys, etc, and when I have other connection just upload the updates and so (specially when traveling)

May I ask why is that? I think it is a very needed solution to be able to answer tickets when I'm away from my laptop - not just to answer and then wait to return to the cradle to upload.

BTW, will this product work with smartphones?

Thanks

As said in two posts above yours, if you have connectivity just use the /pda interface. I use it all the time.

Well, just press sync and your replies will go through?

At the moment, I am on a slow GPRS due to some software problem. KM works perfectly with it. It downloads the snapshot quickly (check compression settings) and I am able to reply to tickets easily. The web based pda interface ( /pda ) isn't bad either.

Right, KayakoMobile isn't limited to only offline usage. It can easily synchronize over a GRPS, EVDO/1xRTT, Wi-Fi, etc. connection.
