Working with attachments - 02-04-2008, 02:24 PM

Hi

My current attachment list is:

Code:
    doc 2.05 MB application/msword
    docx 2.05 MB application/vnd.openxmlformats
    jpeg 1,000.00 KB images/jpeg
    jpg 1,000.00 KB images/jpeg
    pdf 2.05 MB attachment/pdf
    tiff 1,000.00 KB image/tiff
    xls 2.05 MB application/vnd.ms-excel
    xlsx 2.05 MB application/vnd.openxmlformats
    zip 2.05 MB application/octet-stream
My questions:

1) What happens to attachments that don't meet this list?
2) What are other people using for their lists, if at all?
3) What are the pro's con's of using database vs files for storing these attachments?

1. If you have "Restrict Incoming Attachments To Custom Attachment Types" set to "Yes" in Admin CP -> Settings -> Tickets then it will error and say attachment not permitted.
2. I personally don't use them as I my staff are clued on and won't open anything suspcious. I'd advise using it if your staff are less "techie".
3. Use file storage. Database storage just causes problems in all software I have found.

Also make sure you are using the latest stable build. Older build has issues with Restrict Incoming Attachments feature.

What do you mean be a clean upgrade?

To do a clean install, you simply need to delete everything and start again - but I am sure this is not what you wish to do !

To upgrade, as with every upgrade, you need to upload and replace all of the files except for your config.php file. You must then visit /setup/, click on Upgrade and follow the steps - it is largely automated. When done, selete the /setup/ directory.

Remember to take a database backup before performing an upgrade to an unstable (CVS) release.

If I replace the /files folder, will the contents of /files remain or would they be removed?

That depends on your FTP, SFTP client and/or platform, but I have never had this happen to me before. If you do not want to try it out, there is no need to upload files or cache again.
