How to Edit customise the Template

Hi,
I am very new to the product, I just want to create a new template called "Information" at the default page. The default page is contains user login, knowledge base and news. If I follow the template that assign, the layer will split into 2 column and 2 items in 1 row. But i want my new template is fully fill in a rows, how can i do it?
the jpg file that I attach is the screen from my site. I just want the "Welcome To Aexio Support Center" part to display in full in first row. I only have little PHP knowledge, where can i edit the Template -->assign(XXXX) command?
Any suggestion to modify it?
