Question Pirated Scripts and License Transfers - 14-05-2007, 09:59 AM

Hello, I’m currently in talks with an individual about purchasing ownership of his server and clients. Before hand I need to make sure I’m not going to be in any “hot water” for fraudulent scripts. He claims to own a valid license of SupportSuite, but he has yet to back this up and I cannot find anything on your site about license transfers or costs. Am I taking a wrong turn or not?

What would be handy is if there was a page that you could enter the URL into and it would say what license that URL has. Would make verifications for sale a lot easier and would save people reporting a pirated copy when it isn't as they could check first.

Not a viable idea. I saw something like this when IPB used a publicly known license check, and users abused it heavily, publicly naming and shaming actual license holders whose installation falsely reported it was illegal (mistakes happen). Leave the license checking to Kayako staff.

The abuse and piracy department (I manage these) is the place to go to > Abuse and anti-piracy department

I for one like the idea such as that at http://verify.cpanel.net I even already gave this idea to Varun several months ago but haven't seen anything from it.

The abuse and/or sales teams are more than happy to do a license check for anyone who wants one, and will usually complete a query in very little time.

But that costs money as manual work is needed.

I agree with Steve. cPanel has the right idea...

Sorry?
How is a fellow Kayako client being able to see an install of Kayako is illegal going to make it less work for the Kayako staff to pursue? Since we can do nothing about a pirated copy, it makes no sense for us to be able to verify them in the first place...or have I missed something?

If you suspect one, let them know.
If you need one verified to purchase, let them know.

I think thats a bad idea. In my case i dont want people to know i use Kayako. Dont ask, its a competition issue. So that would tell the whole world that my domains uses kayako even when you bought the branding removal from Kayako. Very bad idea. I think to contact the Staff it better.

Agreeded - It is no ones business what backend we all use and it just opens people to attack in the instance of a possibly security issue...

That would be like handing a hacker the phone book for all users to go attack.

But if the sales team are able to do the checks and tell you what the license is the domain holds, the users are still able to find out what license you hold so what difference is there between that and a nice quick automated solution?

I still agree with Steve on this one, a nice quick check area is the way forward.

I'm afraid that a public system to verify a domain's license is not in planning. While I do not need a need for it I will run it by Varun - in the meantime, please contact Sales for license verifications or the Abuse department for suspected cases of piracy.

Thank you,
