How I upgraded to 3.50.05 - 14-03-2009, 07:09 PM

I was running 3.30.something and used this Saturday to upgrade.
Hopefully this will help someone.

Here's how I did it:

Logged into my members page and downloaded 3.50.05
Made a dump of my database with mysql dump
Made 2 backups of my templates from the admin control panel - (everything and then just changes)

I copied my key.php and config.php into the upload folder
I have a customized code base for lots of little things, so I had to look at all of my customized files.
I have documentation of what I changed and why, but I like to double check, so on the server I ran:
find . -newer modules/tickets/wap_manage.php

wap_manage is a file I was sure I never touched and had the same date on it as most of the install. I went through the list and made sure I had documented what I changed (and of course I missed a file). I ran diff of my version against the original versions from 3.30 to double check my changes.

Then I applied my changes 1 by 1 to each of the new files in 3.50. That took about 3 hours. Every time I upgrade I get quicker, but it seems like I have more customization too. I could probably use a tool like patch to automate it, but I'm scared my changes might break something that kayako upgraded. So I do it manually. (Any feedback on this part would be helpful).

Next I uploaded the changed files into a new directory I called "support2" My live installation was in "support"

I changed the permissions of the cache and files folder so my web and mail servers could write to them.

Next, I help my breath, renamed support to support.330 and renamed support2 to support.

I went to mysite.com/support/setup and followed the upgrade prompts - that was easy.

Then I deleted the setup folder on the server.

Finally, I logged into the admin panel and reverted and reapplied my template changes. This took forever too. I had to copy them out and compare my changes to the upgrade and reapply.

The whole process took about 4 hours. It actually went flawlessly.

I really like being able to see the followups. We were manually leaving a note as to what the followup was and hoping it was true. Thanks for that feature.

Now I'm going to post a bunch of feature requests so my changes will be in the next upgrade

Have a great weekend!
-Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed walk-through of your upgrade procedure. I'm glad to hear that it went flawlessly

Lucky you. In my case it corrupted all text, database, etc. Even PHP errors on the site. I had to revert back to old install.

As Jamie said, thanks. This has give me some good pointers for upgrading my own heavily customized Kayako installation.
