Upgrade and server move - 19-06-2006, 09:52 AM

Need advise how to make sure I have only short breakdown of my kayako support desk while upgrading from version 2.3 and moving to another server.

When I finally got v2.3 in production appr. 18 months ago I tested it on 3 or 4 systems (Suse Linux, Redhat, managed server, root server ....) but finally I got it because of the strange Zendoptimizer only on a special debian root server running.
So I really fear server move and upgrading without data loss and breakdowns for many days during production.

My questions:
  1. Does kayako allow me to install version 3 on a new server (with the existing license without deleting the running production desk v2.3)?
  2. If installation works how to move then? Can I mysqldump the v2.3 database and load it into a fresh v3 installation?
  3. Or better installing v2.3 on new server, loading the data and then upgrading to v3 before shutting down the production desk?

Thanks for your advises.
Marco

1) As long as its the Domain Name on the new server.. As licenses are Domain Specific not Server Specific.

2) Well yes and no you can create a mysqldump of version 2.3 and then load it on the new server but you will have to do a FRESH FULL INSTALL of v3 and then to a import of data from v2..

3) If you feer data loss, etc... Then I wouldn't take down production desk until I know for certain that v3 is working good on new server.

Thanks for your help, but one major point does not work:
I cannot run one domain on 2 servers and I'm not willing to pay 2 licenses for one desk and don't trust the upgrading tools so much that I dare to try it out. So why with one domain? I could run then 100 desks at same domain paying only once and not for one months parallely a test instance on another server?

well you could run 100 desks on one domain as the license key will let you but its against Kayako Terms of Service as you are only allowed one installation per license. Additional Licenses are $49.95. But sure they would let you install it a second time temporarly just to test.

And you can too run one domain on 2 servers its just that you would change the nameservers so that one doesnt work anymore but its still on the server so you can go back to it at any time.
